What Is Hydrosol? (And What Can You Do With It)

If you’ve ever wondered what hydrosol is, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most overlooked (and useful) parts of lavender distillation.

At B&B Family Farm, hydrosol is created during the same process we use to make lavender essential oil. While most people focus on the oil, the hydrosol that’s left behind is incredibly versatile and easy to use.

This guide explains what hydrosol is, how it’s made, and the best ways to use lavender hydrosol in everyday life.

What Is Hydrosol?

Hydrosol, sometimes called a herbal distillate or “essential water,” is the water collected during the steam distillation process.

When lavender is distilled:

  • Steam passes through the plant material
  • The steam pulls out essential oils and plant compounds
  • As it cools, it condenses back into liquid
  • The oil separates from the water

What’s left behind is lavender hydrosol—a lightly aromatic water that contains trace amounts of essential oil and water-soluble plant compounds.

Tip: Hydrosol smells different from essential oil. It’s softer, more subtle, and often slightly sweeter.

Hydrosol vs Essential Oil

Hydrosol and essential oil come from the same process, but they are very different products.

  • Essential oil: Highly concentrated, oil-based, strong scent
  • Hydrosol: Water-based, gentle, lightly aromatic

Because hydrosol is much less concentrated, it can often be used directly without dilution.

Pro Tip:

If essential oil feels too strong for your skin or home, hydrosol is usually the better option.
